On Friday, February 27, the new student association Culturas Unidas held its initiation ceremony at UNE. The group’s advisor, counselor Ileana Caraballo from the Office of Quality of Life and Wellbeing, coordinate the activity in cooperation with the association’s president, Tatiana Martínez, a Colombian student in her fourth year of the Criminal Justice program.
The initiation ceremony began with a welcome from the association’s advisor and a reflection by master’s student Enirahs Martina from Curazao. Afterward, the director of international affairs, Laurie Melin, spoke about the integration of this new group into the internationalization activities of the campus as a whole. Counselor Laura Barbosa then spoke about the value of being a member of a student organization and encouraged group members to be active participants in the development of the association. The ceremony included a candle-lighting ceremony, and each group member shared ways in which they plan to contribute to the growth of this new association.
Those who participated in the activity brought food from their home country to share with the group, and the activity ended with a celebration of cultures including food, languages, and music. Association members represent a variety of countries including Aruba, China, Colombia, Curaçao, Finland, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico.
